TANBAE exists to create purposeful products that make people feel good. Our feel-good factor extends beyond the tactile. Sustainability is at the core of what we do as a business. We want our customer’s conscience to feel just as good as their body does when using Tanbae products.
My Role

As a Co-Founder, I took on the responsibility of guiding Tanbae towards our vision and managing the product’s development.
This leadership became even more essential as Tanbae officially launched only weeks before the first COVID-19 outbreak which put an enormous strain on us given the nature of the business and the tumultuous period that followed.

Market research was crucial for our business to ensure that our product was superior to the other products in the market.
Through market research, we were able to understand market trends, consumer preferences, other product flaws and competitors’ strategies.
We used a number of methods to conduct the research such as surveys, competitor analysis, industry events and social media listening.
The results of this market research helped us identify the gaps in the market and provided the necessary information to tailor our product design.

Sourcing the right materials and products was crucial to our success and integral to remaining aligned with our values.
We carefully researched and selected suppliers that offered high-quality products that catered to our needs but also met the environmental and sustainability standards we worked towards as a business.
I was responsible for negotiating pricing, shipping arrangements and quality assurance to make sure they benefited the business, the environment and our customers.
By taking the time to carefully source materials and products, we established a reputation for offering exceptionally high-quality products.

As the lead designer and developer, I meticulously crafted our e-commerce website, which served as the primary hub for sales. My approach involved conducting extensive market research, exploring the competition and utilising this information to create our platform.
Through diligent testing and refinement, I was able to refine the design, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience that exceeded customer expectations and embodied luxury.

I was responsible for ensuring the website was easy to navigate, products were accurately listed, orders were processed efficiently, and customer enquiries and complaints were handled promptly and professionally.
Providing exceptional customer service was crucial for us to build trust and loyalty, which led to positive word-of-mouth recommendations.
By continuously monitoring and improving the platform's user experience, it helped enhance customer satisfaction and drive sales.

Establishing partnerships with stockists was crucial for the growth and success of our business. By working with stockists, we expanded our reach and increased visibility in the market.
The businesses we partnered with provided valuable support in terms of sales, marketing, and distribution, helping us to reach new customers and increase revenue.
A big part of this involved carefully selecting stockists that aligned with our values, mission, and brand image to ensure a strong, long-lasting partnership.
One of our most notable stockists was Coastal Glow, and just prior to the sale of the business we had built a relationship with Adore Beauty who were exploring coming onboard as a stockist.

Analysing the performance of our product and platform involved monitoring key metrics such as website traffic and source, conversion rates, orders, average order value, and customer satisfaction.
By tracking these metrics, I was able to identify areas of improvement and implement strategies to increase customer engagement and revenue.

Selling a business is a major milestone for any entrepreneur, and it was important for me to ensure that the new buyers were committed to carrying on the vision that we had when creating the product.
As the seller, I communicated the core values, mission, and goals of the business, as well as strategies for growth. I provided support during the transition to ensure the new buyers have the resources and knowledge to build on the success of the business.
Systems Used
The main platform I utilised was Shopify, which provided our business with the tools to build and manage our online store including customer management, payment processing, shipping, marketing, real-time data and insights.
Additionally, we made use of Sked Social, Canva and the Adobe Creative Cloud suite for our creative elements and design.

The Iterative Design Process
I was deeply immersed in every aspect of the design process. I devoted countless hours, late into the night, to meticulously refining every element of the design and tweaking samples to ensure that the final product was the very best it could be.
Developing a brand
One of the keys to a successful retail business is the development of a strong brand.
From the very start of Tanbae’s launch we established strong brand recognition, influencer partnerships and a unified brand voice.
Saying Good Bye
Making the decision to shut down the business was a difficult decision but after careful consideration, myself and my co-founder decided to refocus our efforts elsewhere.
On top of the refocusing of our efforts we had the obstacle of having launched moments before the COVID pandemic began and then also had to tack the lingering effects.
The pandemic had presented unprecedented challenges that tested our resilience and adaptability. It was like navigating a maze in the dark, with every turn revealing another obstacle to overcome. It was tough decision but we knew it was the right decision.
We were also blessed to be able to give back during the process and were able to donate all our remaining stock and packaging to a number of charities and schools who were going to put it to good use and help out people in need.
